The flow of new members

Now, I know I have talked about recruiting new players in the past and all that, but this time I'm wanting to discuss something that has puzzled me to no end and I think the key to getting new players is to discover what has caused the once steady in-flowing of new members to come to the slow crawl that it has become today. But I can't think of anything besides the change of RPing style becoming less casual over the years and while that is most likely a part of it (yes, I know I've beat that dead horse a gazillion times lol), there's gotta be more to it than that. Can anyone help me crack this tough shell? Why do you think fewer and fewer people are joining the site than before?

And, of course, what can we do about it?

I think Facebook attributed a lot to it... Also advertising on TOR Guild sites might be a good way to boost membership...

Always nice to have big nerds around. They are the best in the little boxes.

I think the fact that this site is overregulated, and not as friendly to starting players as it could be doesnt help.

Oh don't hold back, tell us how you really feel. Lol. But seriously, if you could offer ideas to help that situation then I'm sure the Whills, my fellow councilors, and myself will have an open ear. But I personally think that there is a slim minority aren't as friendly as they could be, that being said, I don't know many that go out of there way to welcome someone but at the same time most people in this day and age don't go out of their way to greet every new person to their neighborhood. Just sayin.

The site has a lot to take in at first glance, and if it hadn't been for the kindness of a player called Kirus, who was good enough to send a message with helpful links to useful information, I would have been stuck going through board by board.

Well, I think in a way, Boba has a good point. There is a lot to read for some newer players who haven't ingrained the rules and sometimes, you just wanna jump in and start posting. I can totally see that all the regulations and what not could be off putting if you have to go look for them. Perhaps, reading the guidelines or some of the major rules, should be put into the registration process so that each person is hit with it and they don't have to go looking for it.

Re: The flow of new members

I've mentioned it a couple of times and its supposed to be being organised, but having rules and regs spread out in different places doesn't help either. Some in the GrrrrrrrrrrrPec and others in the NL, its just too much all over the place.

IF I recall there was once a welcome to JvS private message that was sent automatically to each new account. It had all the info needed. What ever happened to that?

See, the thing is, there is a bit too much reading now. When I joined back in Summer 08, there wasn't nearly as much reading, and RP was easier to jump into. I can understand how new players may feel overwhelmed.

There used to be, but as far as I remember that stopped a few years ago, not entirely sure of the reason... I think Anaxilea may have mentioned the reason but I can't remember...[/color:16duaqeg]

Glad to hear that my efforts aren't in vain, although more often than not I get replies saying that the account is just an Alternate account made by current members.

In regards to aiding new members, the little group that I made has died a bit due to members being busy from exams etc, but I will be sending a PM to them all to see if I can get it kick started again.

If anyone is interested in helping, then please look here[/url:16duaqeg] and let us know. There is also a usergroup located here[/url:16duaqeg] that you can join so that it's easier to track members.[/color:16duaqeg]

Re: The flow of new members

First of all, thanks a TON Kirus for linking to that. I completely forgot that was going on and it looks AMAZING. I went ahead and added my name to the list in the thread.

I also created a thread in CTW, because I wanna get the Whill's take on all this and get some input from them. Here's a link to that thread.

Also, there's this thread that's been stagnant for a while. I'm still hoping that this gets moving because a lot of great ideas happened here, although sadly a lot of it was lost.

Re: The flow of new members

Has it occurred to anyone else that our format is foreign to new users? Most of the RP sites I've found function more like the JOTW where plots are all contained in a single thread rather than spread across the universe where new people can't just open a thread and figure out what's going on and who is in charge.

Players are free to fill out their character profiles here or completely ignore them. Other sites have approved character listings where a new person can read up on what characters there are and what faction they are in. There is nothing like that here. The members list doesn't help if you don't know what you're looking for.

There are no guidelines for what padawans can do, or where Knights should start or what the Sith are doing. They are left to read the rules and wade into the deep end of the Dagobah swamps.

Re: The flow of new members

You actually have a really good point there, Sin. While it would be unrealistic to completely switch over formats, we could organize the site a bit. I mean, with the rules all over the place and all... that's something that's been needed to be fixed for a LONG time but we keep procrastinating. lol

Re: The flow of new members

I don't think the rules are a problem. Most people just follow them if they want or not. I wouldn't say the site is over-regulated, I would say the problem with a lack of members is a result of just that -a lack of members. Less members means less people to spontaneously post with, and I find it really hurts the enthusiasm for RP if there is no one responding to your posts. My guess is that most newcomers won't be that patient. How do you realistically curb that? More people, not more alts, or regulatory groups.

There needs to be more advertising. I mean, the app on facebook was in your face, and that's how I found out about this site, just a few months after this website's inception. There were so many people back then that it didn't really matter how you played, although I admit I had to be a bit flashy to garner any attention from the veterans. So, with advertising, this site will get shoved more and more often in front potential RPers, and they might just give us a shot.

Also, word of mouth recommendations help.

Re: The flow of new members

Changing something that works has worked out very few times in the past.... with anything really.

In my opinnion, this is a matter of PR. Maybe few people know we are here.

A good way of advertisement I saw on some sites is the exchange of banners. There is a thread for information about other sites, where the sites own information is posted. of course this would give a little extra work for the admins since they will have to check if the other party actually has a banner or info posted up.

So, basically an exchange of info between RP sites. I would love to put up one in a hungarian site (since they have some english threads too that are active, and I am sure those writing there would love to get into a larger place) but as far as I know, we dont have anything like that here, so...

but that would be a sollution.

Re: The flow of new members

That would be awesome, Sel. And you make a good point. That's definitely something we could look into. But we need to be careful in the way we advertise too. Perhaps, advertise as JvS, and have the JvS lightsaber clash symbol, but don't actually use the words Jedi and Sith in the ad. I dunno, I might just be overly paranoid about the copyright stuff, but just to be on the safe side.
