Re: Open Space and Asteroid Field

*Somewhere, deep in the back of his head, the situation was being analyzed and dissected from all angles and conclusions were being drawn. Conclusions like the fact that Nedya'ven was a scholar, rather than just another less-skilled hacker, and that she could not hold her drink and the men in the cantina kept looking more and more threatening as time went by (along with a couple dozen alterations he could make to the seven ships he was currently contracted to work on, three new battle droid designs, and an AI matrix five times faster than Indy's current configuration). Unfortunately for that part of his brain deep in the back of his head, the admission that Nedya'ven found him interesting seemed to force all other conscious thought out. Which was also unfortunate for his sense of equilibrium and he barely managed to stay standing when she leaned on him.* *She's touching me! And not with a blaster! WhatdoIdowhatdoIdowhatdoIdo... What do I say? Should I say anything?* *A glance back into the cantina.* *We need to get outta here...* "Uh... me, um... either. How about we leave?" *And then he reached out and grabbed her wrist to help escort her away from the cantina. To where, he had no idea, as that would require higher brain function, but it was away.*

Re: Open Space and Asteroid Field

"Hrk-!"

*She stumbled after him as he pulled her into motion. He likely didn't realize that there wasn't a lot of weight to members of her species, so she was, sort of, prepared to be hauled off her feet when he grabbed her wrist. If not for those wings, she would have taken an embarrassing spill to the floor, but one powerful beat of their full span had her back on balance, again. At least, in so far as a drunken Nedya'ven could be balanced.*

"Why, where're we going? My room is back t'other way-"

*As Nedya flung her free arm wide to point down the corridor, her hand cracked against something solid. A rough, firm grip wrapped around the arm, trapping it against the chest of the falleen she had just struck. She tilted her head back to focus her blurry vision on a face that was disturbingly familiar.*

*Xestan grinned*

*Nedya attempted to dance out of the way, but there was nowhere to go as the weequay grabbed her rapier off her belt. Already she could feel the creeping effects of the falleen's pheromones, doing their best to intoxicate her thoughts and actions. Her wings beat at the air as she tried her best to break out of the falleen's grip.*

"Oz!"

*The weequay, oddly absent of his quarren friend, moved around the falleen to make a grab for Oz's hand on Nedya's wrist, intending to pry it loose.*

Re: Open Space and Asteroid Field

*What the he- Oh no you don't!* *As the Weequay's hand tried to close around his own, Oz jerked it back, then drove it up and forward into the Weequay's jaw, causing a sudden surge of pain (in his hand. the weequay probably didn't even feel it).* *OW!!!* *Now addled beyond any semblance of the genius intellect he possessed normally, Oz's mind could think of only one thing to do.*

"HE- *SMACK!*

*The Weequay's fist slammed into his head and knocked him out like a light.*

Re: Open Space and Asteroid Field

*The falleen groaned.*

*He turned his attention back to the S'kytri, then his brows lifted and he flashed his teeth with a growl. Even with his use of pheromones, the bird wasn't looking at him, but rather was fixated on the puny human that Drak was now tossing over one shoulder. What was it about that runt that held her attention? He gripped her face between his forefinger and thumb and turned her fear-filled eyes back onto his green face.*

*She remembered this feeling. She had analyzed it carefully, turned it over in her head, knew exactly what it was and where it was coming from. She felt drawn to the falleen, and was repulsed by that feeling, because she knew it wasn't her own. Wasn't the same as true desire, but the chemicals in her head were beginning to light up just as before. She was compelled to follow, or at least, let him lead her, just as before.

Oz. Oz was hurt. She tried to turn to look at him again, but Xestan was pulling her along, keeping one arm around her hip and the other against the side of her head to press against his chest, as though he was just a compassionate guy walking with a drunken friend. She didn't have the presence of mind to fight back, so she conserved her energy, trying to resist the concentrated dose of fallen pheromones she was now being exposed to.

It was with a mixture of panic and relief when Xestan and Drak carried them into a hole-in-the-wall inn that was still in the bowels of the station. On the one hand, they weren't going to be dragged immediately onto a ship and flown off stars know where. On the other, there was not much to stop the falleen from taking his vengeance on them both, by whatever means he intended to keep them for.

The weequay tossed Oz unceremoniously into the 'fresher, and to her surprise, Xestan dumped her within the small confines as well.

*It was difficult to tell on the craggy face of the weequay, but Drak's mood had seemed to sour. Looked like there might be a fight on taking turns.

As soon as the door closed, Nedya moved to roll Oz onto his back. She fought off the wave of dizzying wooziness that was the effect of anxiety mixing poorly with cheap booze, and lightly brushed his face with the back of her hand. She spoke in a hushed whisper.*

"Oz? Are you okay? Oz?"

*Damn that weequay. That was two severe head injuries in less than 12 hours.*

*...and then connect the high-torsion grounding bolt to the external static plate, which will solve any feedback problems you might get with an internal hookup.... oooh, hookups... Wasn't Rogas- wait... Deja vu much?* *Oz's eyes opened groggily as he began to come to, and sure enough, there was the gorgeous green visage of Nedya'ven.* "What happ..." *And then it all came back in a rush and he sat bolt upright, narrowly missing Nedya's head as he spun to face the door, which slid open at his mental command (you'd think they would have bothered to lock it, though that likely would have slowed him down by exactly zero seconds).* "Gyah!" *...and the door promptly slid closed again before the clearly angry Weequay could take a step forward and get inside. This time it did lock.*

*Pulling his legs up, Oz planted his elbows on his knees and palms on his forehead.* *Thunk.* *What was that?* *Looking down at the floor to his right, the unmistakable shape of his ultra-multi sitting there to greet him, an idea began to form in Oz's brain. Picking the tool up, he turned it over in his hands, as though examining it for the first time.* *He seemed unaware that he had said the entire spiel out loud as he raised his voice to normal conversation level.* "Are you gonna be able to run if we have to?"

Re: Open Space and Asteroid Field

*She leaned back quickly as he shot up, her eyes wide. How the hell could anyone take a hit like that and return immediately to sharp awareness?

...Well, perhaps awareness wasn't quite the right word, as he didn't seem to have one foot solidly planted in the here and now, most of the time. The door slid open, and she looked as surprised as the weequay just before it shut again. Her head tilted slightly and her brow furrowed. Her thoughts were buzzing in her head, not making much sense, but something started to click. Something about that cantina sign from earlier.

Oz's low murmurings disrupted her chain of thought, and she turned back to him, understanding the words but not understanding the implications of them. However, it sounded as though he knew of a way out. She shook her head once, the slur still thickening her words.*

"Can't move straight," *she admitted.* "...but if I can get a running start, get out o' the room without getting grabbed...I can fly up, won't be tripping over my own feet."

*A line of worry appeared between her brows.*

"Oz...that lowlife falleen's infloo-enze affects me, makes me not want to run. I don't want him near me."

Re: Open Space and Asteroid Field

*Fly? Where was she going to fly in the maintenance access tunnels? The tallest of them was barely over three meters and it wasn't anywhere near here, assuming "here" is where I think it is... (it's probably not)* "Ok, well then just... stick close. And if we both die, make sure they spell my name right in my biography. It'll probably sell trillions of copies in the first month alone..." *Oz.* "Right. Re-calibrating. *Three deft motions and a string of commands transmitted from his implant had the Ultra-multi stun gun up and ready for action, and Oz aimed it squarely at the door where the Weequay's fist had begun resounding, then sent the command to open the door. The Weequay stood stunned for a moment, just long enough for Oz to get the readings necessary to avoid killing him, then took a step forward as Oz "pulled the trigger" (figuratively speaking. there wasn't an actual trigger).*

*There was no flash of bright light or unbearably loud noise as the tool directed and fired the neurologically tuned EMP, the weequay simply took one step forward and collapsed on his face.* "I cannot believe that actually worked..." *It actually worked! I am so going to patent this...* "Come on." *He did his best to help Nedya up, but he had never been cut out for physical exertion (apart from crawling around inside ships) and she likely would have done just as well on her own.* "I don't see the lowlife so maybe we can get out before he comes back."

Re: Open Space and Asteroid Field

"What worked? What the kriff was that? How-"

*She started to lean forward to touch the fallen weequay, but before her hand made contact, she was being pulled to her feet. Right, the lowlife falleen. Couldn't let him get near again. She nodded at Oz and she stumbled over the inert body in her hurry to leave the refresher. Luck must have been with them as they were able to leave the inn without incident, but neither one was willing to linger.

This part of the station was unfamiliar to Nedya. She hadn't seen how they had been taken to this corridor, and she wasn't sure which direction led back to the cantina, or if they even wanted to go back there. For all she knew, that was where the falleen was. Oz seemed to pick a direction, though, and following his direction, she 'stayed close.' They sped past questionable shops and closed storage areas that didn't look to see much use. Some of the lights overhead were flickering, in need of maintenance.*

"Wait..."

*She blinked, the internal map in her mind clearing away the drink-induced fog.*

"I'm sure this corridor wasn't supposed to turn lef-"

*He pulled her again and they continued to run, jumping down another intersection that Nedya'ven just KNEW wasn't there on the station's schematics she had studied. To confirm her observation, the sign they passed was indicating a junction and number that didn't exist. By now, after this many twists and turns, the foot traffic had dwindled down to nothing. She and Oz were the only ones in sight.

She slowed to a standstill, her eyes scanning down one end of the corridor they were in to the other. A cold, icy feeling began to creep up her spine, a feeling that Nedya'ven was very unfamiliar with. The feeling of being lost.*

"...Where are we?"

*Oz, bent over with hands on knees and panting heavily, looked up at Nedya through exhausted eyes.* "I..." *heave* ...have no... *pant* ...idea." *Wait... why were we running so hard? If we ran into the sleazy green dude I could have just zapped him like the other guy. Panic: One. Intellect: Zero. Well... Intellect: One. That bit with the neuro-EMP was pretty stupendous if I do say so myself... (which I do. a lot)* "What do we do now?" *Oz straightened, but immediately pulled a hand to his side, which felt like someone was trying to rip his kidney out right through his skin.* "Ow... If I ever decide to run like that again, shoot me. It'll be less painful."

Re: Open Space and Asteroid Field

*Nedya jerked, her wings flaring.*

"What d'you mean what do we do now?"

*She took two steps down one direction, stopped, turned to go another direction, stopped again, lost her balance and fell to her hands and knees. She balled up her fist and struck the floor in frustration.*

"This s'your station! How can you not know where we are? Can't y'just ask Indy?"

*She curled her legs up tightly against her chest, wrapping her arms around them. Of course, she knew he couldn't. She had already tried contacting the AI once before, and had been unable to. She had inferred that there was something about this place that interfered with the station's mind. She lifted her face, staring up at the ceiling, which suddenly seemed much lower than before. No place to fly, no way to get a visual of her surroundings.*

"...These pathways don't go in a grid, and the signs don't match the intersections. There have been alterations. We just need to move in one directi- nng."

*She suddenly gripped the sides of her head, her temples throbbing. The alcohol was beginning to burn through her body, leaving its nasty side-effects.*

Re: Open Space and Asteroid Field

*Oz dropped to the floor next to Nedya, pulling the ultra-multi out of it's holster and idly turning it over in his hands.* "You're right. I should know what's going on in my own station, but the truth is, I got lost down here once before. When I first found this place floating in the middle of nowhere. I was lost for two and a half days before Craig finally found me lying unconscious under the mid-port hangar deck, half dead from dehydration. I've been terrified of the place ever since." *This is weird. This morning I couldn't even speak and look at her at the same time, and now all of a sudden I'm as clear as glass and completely unaffected by the most terrifying place I've ever been. There really are miracles.* *Looking around, Oz noted that they were sitting in a small alcove just off one of the maintenance tunnels that had probably once held a repair droid at one time, but was now empty and dark. After aiming the ultra-multi at the nearest light fixture, it flickered twice and went out, plunging the alcove into darkness. Anyone walking past would now have trouble just seeing the recess, much less identifying anything inside, but Oz still had a clear line of sight down the tunnel from the way they had come.* "Try and sleep it off. I'll wake you up if they find and kill us."

*She stared at him in surprise, though in the darkness, all she could see was the faint outline of his face. It was the most he'd said to her in a single breath, and revealed more of himself than the entire data stream from the Barloz, had. She started to object, finding the idea of staying still for any length of time at best unappealing, but the practical side of her kicked her in the proverbial choobies.

She was absolutely worthless inebriated as she was, and instead of abandoning her foolish feathers to the dangers of the underbelly as he should have, he was actually offering to keep watch until she recovered to some functional level above incapacitated.

Reluctantly, she dropped her gaze and nodded, then curled upon her side to succumb to fatigue. She prayed to whatever dark powers that might be that she would not dream. Please, not in front of a witness. Not in front of Oz. Her eyes closed, but her sleep was, indeed, troubled.*

Re: Open Space and Asteroid Field

[...]

*She awoke with the sound of her heart pounding in her ears. Her mouth was dry, and her dark surroundings were unfamiliar. Disorienting. She remained still, listening, until her mind rose from the nightmarish sleep to recall where she was, and why.

She reached out, found Oz's leg, and exhaled a sigh as her thundering pulse began to slow. He had stayed, after all. Her unsteady hand pulled away from him so that she could push herself upright and regain her bearings. Her head still ached, and now her stomach felt ill, but her mind was at least no longer sluggish. There was no telling how long she had been out. She opened her mouth to ask Oz, only to promptly shut it again.

A sound. Heavy tread. Multiple, and by the sounds of it, approaching their location. Was that what had awakened her? She reached for her belt, remembered her vibrorapier had been taken. Fek! How could she not have remembered to grab it off the weequay?*

Re: Open Space and Asteroid Field

*Oz started when Nedya grabbed his leg, but thankfully managed not to squeal like a little girl. That would have been terrible on multiple counts, not least because of the gang of sleazy pals marching toward them. With lamps.* *Oh this is just peachy. Why do thugs have to pick NOW to get smart and carry lights? It isn't fair... Then again, I have an IQ higher than all of theirs put together. That's gotta count for something. Ideas, ideas... Oh! Duh.* *Ever-so-quietly, Oz slipped the ultra-multi (I need a better name for this thing) out of it's holster again and turned around so he could use his body to block the faint glow from the readout as he began amp up the output to levels the tool was most definitely not meant to handle (thank the force he decided to use a mini-generator instead of power cells) As the thugs came closer, a faint hum could be heard coming from the tool, growing in volume and pitch as the power levels kept rising.*

*About ten meters away, the first thug heard the whine of the tool and gestured to his companions to hurry up.* *Comeoncomeoncomeon... Genius, don't fail me now.* *Their pace accelerating, the thugs were within six meters and were almost able to see back into the recess when the ultra-multi's whine reached it's peak and Oz fired the burst. This time the orb on the end of the tool lit up, the whine's pitch rocketed out of human auditory range, and when the burst was released, the EM projector overloaded and shattered; but the thugs all toppled to the ground and remained there, motionless. Though they might have not existed at all for all the attention Oz gave them. His stare was fixed despondently on the shattered end of his precious tool.* "Oh come on! How is this fair? This has got to be the worst day of my entire freakin' life."

Re: Open Space and Asteroid Field

*The S'kytri tensed, her fingertips lightly pressing against the floor as she slid into a runner's starting position. Nedya was no great warrior, but she had been trained how to fight. Perhaps they didn't stand a chance of winning, but she was not going to cower in a corner and just let them-

The electronic high-pitched hum had her aching head screaming in protest. She placed her hands over her ears, wincing, but when she opened her eyes again, it was to witness the approaching figures collapsing as one. All of them. The entire group.

She turned sharply to look at Oz, but his attention was focused on the strange device, cradling it in the palms of his hands. Nedya immediately turned away again, her eyes dropping. Her fault. She was the reason for the worst day of his entire freakin' life. But, now was not the time for self-pity. As the S'kytri stood and emerged from the darkness into the halo of light emitted by the fallen lamps, she recognized one of the fallen forms as belonging to Drak. Fek, how many times can someone get zapped by that tool without suffering some permanent neurological damage? However, his presence confirmed that Xestan was, indeed, looking for them, but that was not the only disturbing implication of the arrival of these men. She reached down and grabbed the vibrorapier from his belt, and then helped herself to a blaster from one of the other fallen figures.*

"This is a large group. The falleen has more friends than I had assumed."

*How likely was it that the entire group of them, instead of fanning out, had stayed together to search? It wasn't.*

"...must be more teams than this. I should have left the station."

*She straightened, knots of guilt tightening within her abdomen.*

"I'll find a way to get you out of here, Oz."

*Wait... isn't that backwards? All the holovids have the guy saving the girl (well, at least half of them), AND this is my station we're trapped on. Of all the places to be trapped, I should be able to get out of this one. And why is it her fault?* "Look, these goons are clearly after me. I mean, it's not the first time the most brilliant mind in the galaxy has been in high demand. I'm a very popular choice among the shady sorts. Problem is, some of them don't like the idea of coming to me. Makes 'em feel less powerful or something... Indy explained it once but I wasn't paying attention." *And he said it all with complete seriousness.* "We just need to get back inside Indy's broadcast range. Problem is, the hangar decks are reinforced and I can't transmit through them." *It really helps, being in near-total darkness. It's easier to not look at her when I can't see anything but an outline... but dang, what an outline...* "Um... ideas?"

Re: Open Space and Asteroid Field

*Despite their situation, despite her sense of claustrophobic-induced anxiety, Nedya huffed out a laugh. The egocentric expression of paranoia somehow, strangely, made the S'kytri feel slightly better. It gave her a sense of their situation being more of a mild inconvenience than one that the two of them could not handle. She ejected the power cell from the blaster in her hand, checking its levels before striking it against her palm and securing it back in place.*

"If the reinforcements of the hangars above us are what is preventing us from getting assistance, then there is only one direction we should be going. Up. There have to be some maintenance ladders at one of these junctions...we're bound to run across one."

*With the blaster in one hand, Nedya reached out with the other and found Oz's palm in the darkness. She interlaced her fingers with his and pulled him along.*

"It'll be more difficult for these guys to find us if we don't stay still."

*At least, that was the theory. As they moved through the abandoned corridors, Nedya's mind was beginning to work up to full speed again, her inquisitiveness not able to let go of certain details. She still didn't understand anything about Oz, despite her best efforts to figure out how his mind worked. She wanted to ask about the multi-tool in his hand, but with its recent overload, thought that might be too sensitive of a subject. She opted for a different angle, glancing over her shoulder at him.*

"...You said you weren't a killer. Have you never shed blood? Never been in a fight, enlisted in a war?"

*In this violent age of the galaxy, that someone could escape that fate seemed as unlikely as it was enviable.*

Re: Open Space and Asteroid Field

*When she posed her question, Oz stopped walking and pulled his hand free. It was difficult enough talking to her even with the darkness, and physical contact wouldn't help matters. Spreading his arms to indicate himself, he answered.* "Do I look like a soldier to you?" *Some people ask the strangest questions...* "And have you seen me fight? I'm not exactly a noghri death commando." *Oooh, noghri death commandos... I should hire some. Maybe then I wouldn't get into this kind of trouble. I'll have to look into it.*

*Stepping past Nedya, Oz turned a corner and came face-to-face (well, they were a good ten meters away) with a duo of burly-looking aliens.* *What am I, a xenobiologist? Well, I did get a degree for it when I was working with Rogas, and by "get" I actually mean "created in the databases after studying up for a week", but it's dark and they're both human shaped. Could be any number of species.* *Unfortunately, Oz didn't backpedal fast enough and both the aliens saw him, though when they reached for their comlinks to call the others the line stayed conspicuously silent. Back against the wall, Oz turned his head to look in Nedya's direction.* "I... uh, found a ladder. There's two of them, and for some reason their comlinks don't work." *He closed his eyes and concentrated for a moment.* "Or their guns. Funny how that works out, ain't it? Oh, and they'll probably come charging around the corner in about five seconds."

Re: Open Space and Asteroid Field

"Their guns don't work?"

*Nedya's hushed voice was laced with surprise, but also with something else. Suspicion. She had not forgotten how her own personal blaster had 'stopped working' upon her confrontation with Oz. Not a coincidence. He had something to do with it...but how, from way back here, when his multi-tool was obviously not functioning? There was something more to it.

It would give her yet something else to think about in the coming days, but at this moment, she didn't have time to think. She could only trust in the inexplicable assurance that she was the only one with a working firearm. She steadied the weapon and fired upon the first face that showed around the corner, leaving a perfect, smoking hole in the center of his forehead.

This caused the other to dive back around the corner. She saw the muzzle of his blaster flash around the corner to attempt to fire at them, then disappear again when nothing happened. Sounds of his struggling with the blaster could be heard. Nedya rolled her eyes, growing impatient, and simply stepped around the corner to blow him away, too. The S'kytri killed callously, and did not spare the bodies another glance. There was something oddly...cold...about the way she did not shy away from killing, particularly considering that by all appearances, she was nothing more than a quiet scholar.*

"Up we go."

*She swung herself onto the ladder, folding her wings tightly against her back as she climb up each rung and pushed away the access hatch in the ceiling.*

Re: Open Space and Asteroid Field

*Oz jumped when the first bolt was fired.* *Couldn't she at least do it a little farther from my face? But nooooo... right past the ear.* *Then she stepped past him around the corner and the other guard was dead too and she was disappearing up the ladder.* "Right... up." *He had never been traumatized by violence, well not recently anyway (the first time he'd seen somebody die he was whimpering for a week. it was really quite pitiful), but Nedya's cold efficiency startled him. He just didn't expect it from something so... gorgeous.* *Oh, right. Up the ladder.* *Following Nedya up the maintenance shaft, he did his best not to look up (or down really) and they quickly came to the access hatch, which probably opened into a maintenance storage unit.*

*Yup. Definitely maintenance storage.* *The room was organized and clean, unlike the tunnel below, but the droids that had once manned the station and used the lift set next to the ladder (a lift that hadn't been working in ages), were nowhere in sight. They'd probably been taken apart and sold for salvage in the underbelly. Moving past Nedya, Oz tried the door only to find it locked, then tried it again a second later after remedying the problem and watched it slide open easily.* *Ah... freshly recycled air. Some things you just don't appreciate until you've been deprived of them. Like clean floors for example... I need another shower.* "Are you sure you don't... uh... *Oz stepped out of the room and turned to face Nedya, who was a lot more visible in the decent light of the upper levels than she had been down below.* ...want a room up here?"
