Awakening OOC discussion thread

The first season starts with the crew waking up one at a time throughout the course of the episode, this means that you can either show yourself waking up or you can be found already awake and wandering around the ship. What has happened is we have awaken aboard the Rys'jouna, we will not know who we are, why we're there, how we got there or where we are, what happened, or anything really. We'll remember speech and abilities, and that is it, no exceptions.

This will give you an opportunity to write your characters for the first time from scratch, no baggage whatsoever. This will not last however, throughout season 1 and possibly season 2 you will start to regain memories through triggers, this will not happen in the first episode. This will give whoever you were in your previous life a chance to battle your new self (if they are different at all). The prison ship is not scrapped completely, just how we got there will remain a mystery for a while.

With all that said, are there any questions?

I like it, we can just start writing without worrying about how we got there. It should make it easier to get this off the ground and into production!

Exactly what it says . It was used as a prison ship once right? well I'm saying I want to wake up locked in one if i get to have a main role. Find a way to mess with the crew without even leaving the confines of my sweet little abode...

The Rys'jouna isn't a prison ship, I was just saying that's how we got on board, though we won't know that for the first episode and may not find it out for a while. We'll all most likely wake up hooked to something that looks like a weird scifi operating table or hospital bed not in a cell.

So will we all remember our names? Or are our memories completely blank?

You will remember skills, knowledge, your name (but you'll have to think about it for a second), motor skills.

You will no remember events of your life, if you know someone on the ship then you won't know them anymore, you won't know how you have whatever knowledge or skills you retained.

Go head with the Q&A. I'd like to get everything like that out of the way before we start.

Say a character is skilled in certain martial arts, would they remember the arts or would it only be instinctual forms until the memories of forms start returning?

Jason Bourne woke up from a botched mission, not knowing his real name or even that he was an assassin, yet he was able to escape from a customs station, neutralizing every guard that stood in his way with his specially trained hand-to-hand combat skills and a .44 caliber handgun (little fuzzy on the details). Not much longer after that, he was able to escape from local police in a high-speed car chase, showcasing his obvious professional daredevil driving skills, which he also, no doubt, picked up from his assassin training. Finally, (at least in the first movie
) Jason was able to single-handedly neutralize the splinter cell he was originally assigned to with little more than the gear he had salvaged from his safe and other agents that were trying to kill him.

For having little memory of being an assassin, Jason was able to retain enough of his training and skills to keep him alive, as well as doing the necessary research to figure out exactly who he was. If we base our characters' amnesia off of him, I would say instinctual, at least to begin with, but exact forms of fighting styles would come back after a short while.[/color:1igk6ku5]

Re: Season 1, Episode 1 (Pilot) - Genesis

What sort of items would we be waking up with (aside from clothes, of course)?

I can understand Jedi characters having their lightsabers handy since those wouldn't exactly sitting on every bulkhead of the ship?

Or, conversely, would certain personal effects (like said 'sabers) be hidden away aboard the ship for our characters to discover? Sort of like a breadcrumb trail.

I only ask because Levi isn't a Jedi but if something as personal/useful as a lightsaber is able to be found, then what sort of leeway would I have for Levi to find one of his trusty liquor bottles handy, or more practically, his dusty old ministerial or medical books? I will be happy to respect the rule of "You know nothing about yourself" and see to it that nothing Levi wakes up with could be remotely considered a journal or other item of such significance as to reveal his backstory to him.

A little clarification on these points would be appreciated.

It's preferred that major items like that be somewhere else in the ship: journal's, lightsabers, large items or items that would lead to triggering a memory to reveal some of your past. However I think a good rule of thumb would be if it's something you would carry in your pocket you can have it. A deck of cards, a flask, jewelry, some food, or a pack of cigarettes.

We would like everyone to not have any flashbacks of their life until after the first episode or two. Did that answer your question?

Re: Season 1, Episode 1 (Pilot) - Genesis

Well, Draykon, you know where I stand on this (for the most part). The only things I would have to add (or possibly put out into the open forum) is that when we consider how we all got on board the vessel, I'd say that we need to establish how we all ended up in the separate portions of the Rys'jouna. Will there be a collection of droids that serve aboard the vessel? Sort of like the Keepers of Mass Effect? We are technically playing with an ancient and highly-advanced race's technology here. I'd say it's worth a bit of consideration to hash that out.

As for items belonging to one's person, I'd also think that we need to try and make our "arrival" angle a bit more solid before deciding who has what tools at their disposal. If it's a prison ship, and we broke out, then there's a chance that whatever weapons/items we had to begin with, we raided them from the lockers on board (and thus, we simply were relieved of them again once we were put to sleep by the ship, etc. etc.); if we happened to be spirited aboard by the many advanced systems that the Rys'jouna has, we might not have any of our players' associated gear due to the ship's failsafes (or something like that, it's really up to the individuals involved here how that plays out).

If any of this doesn't ring true with you folks, then I'll work with whatever we come up with. Honestly, I think perhaps non-threatening items (such as weapons and the like) would be better off left somewhere else. Keeps everyone honest in the beginning, and perhaps later on, we can find other weapons/discover a machine of some sort on-board that can construct them for us. Again, this is just my opinion...I understand we need "triggers" to help us regain our memory, so maybe just through the simple use of whatever items we have in our possession would be enough to facilitate that need. Weapons just don't seem to fit into the Origins episode like one would think. Having to improvise due to lack of immediate resources, however, that can make for some interesting writing, as well as allow us to think outside the box...however, as I've said before, opinions and all.

I dunno, though...what do you guys think?

Re: Season 1, Episode 1 (Pilot) - Genesis

That does answer my question, yes- thank you!

So deck of cards size, preferably nothing more than a pocket full (if that) and nothing that can trace directly to one's memories.

I do like Aedon's point about improvisation regarding weapons. Lightsabers are a dime a dozen on the site, so it'd be interesting if everyone on the ship was forced back down to "mere mortal" status and had to use weapons which can't cut through anything or deflect laser blasts.

I like the idea as well, gives that sense of vulnerability that some aren't used to.
