Tolkien wasn't that prone to over-description. If you think he was, try reading Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell. It'll give you a new perspective with which to view Tolkien's work.

If you were 10 when you read them, you need to reread them. I tried when I was younger and didn't grasp much. It's impossible to try and tackle a wall of print that large at such a young age. The books are excellent, though not the best fantasy has to offer. However, personal taste does prevail over all else, I suppose.

On the original topic, however...

I'm honestly not too worried about Disney sticking to the canon. My only concern is that "Episode VII" will allegedly be an original story. In my opinion, this kind of opens the door for Disney to create their own canon, and I'm not sure if it would fit with the rest of Star Wars, EU or no. Episodes I - VI were about the rise/fall of Darth Vader, in George Lucas' own words. I'd probably expand that to the rise of Luke as well, though that's debatable since that only concerns the original trilogy.

With Disney doing movies like the Avengers, Marvel's canon is already so convoluted you can literally do whatever you want with the characters as long as they're familiar. It's different with Star Wars. There aren't multiple universes to draw inspiration from. There's (generally) a single timeline that's been followed (and meticulously recorded, at that). To add a brand new story to the timeline would either make no sense (as any event of consequence would have surely been in the timeline already - they'd have to worry about fixing plotholes for centuries) or they would have to recreate the canon.

Like I said, I'm pretty sure Disney could stick to the canon if they wanted to, and I'm not concerned about messing anything up if they actually go about making movies based [i:2mgdi5w4]on[/i:2mgdi5w4] canon. I'm skeptical about the news that Episode VII will be an original story, however.

I hope that rant made sense.

I've got to confess, the more I think on it, the more I'm warming up to the idea.

I did have a horrific/fun thought the earlier today.

What if it had been the other way around?

New game for us, things George Lucas could have done if he was put in charge of Disney...

GL in charge of Disney would mean two sequels to John Carter of Mars.

great idea for episode seven.

Turns out Jar Jar is still alive, and HE was the true Sith Lord. Palps was his puppet to ready the galaxy for the true evil that is Gunganisim.

*Facepalms*

Until Ford himself comes out and states he is interested, I am treating such reports as Sithspit.

It says quite clearly that this "information" came from "a source", which can mean anything; someone looking to cash-in from the media with a supposed expos├â┬®; someone trying to put pressure on Ford to think on it at least; or even Lucas himself simply kriff about for Sithspit n giggles.

End of the day, as I keep iterating, these so-called factoids will be making news weekly until Disney comes out and declares exactly what it proposes to do, and who will be in it.

Ford has said a number of times he "didn't really understand Star Wars", and "didn't feel too happy about Han Solo being alive at the end of RotJ". If he really didn't like it all that much, as implied, then why would he want to re-visit it? Sure, the same could be said about Indy I guess. And hell yeah, if he was to be in it, then epic! Ford rules. Solo rules. Brilliantsauce! But even if they offered him Sithspit of money, I doubt he would go for it for that reason alone.

Lets not get too excited until there's something official released, eh?

3 decades is a long time, maybe its just for those old times? Either way I'd die just to see solo on the big screen for the first time.

Re: Disney buying Lucasfilm, making Episode 7?

All that I know is if Luke and Leia are in the movie than they need to use Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher. I am fine with a new story but if it will be at a time when they couldn't take up their roles just leave the characters out. Like Luke can be the Grand Master that we see a small glimpse of or nothing at all but another actor would lead to just to much whining for so called "fans."

Re: Disney buying Lucasfilm, making Episode 7?

My concern is that they will apply a formula and then it won't be about the story.

Like this:

Big actor + cool tech + explosions = lots of f*cking money.

Most SW fans of the original trilogy point to ESB as their favorite movie. It was all character development. There were a couple cool fights but it was all about Luke's growth, Leia warming up to Han and Lando's betrayal. I want less action, not no action mind you, but I want story. Make me care about the characters before you blow them up.
