My feelings exactly, Inferno. We really need to get this up and moving again. And, along with it, I have been thinking... we could use a nice way to get the word out there about JvS. I'd like to see the site's population grow some.

Re: New Players Guide to the JvS Universe

What?

You want more people, coming here?

ARE YOU MAD?!

All seriousness aside, I think it might be a good idea to first get this whole new players guide up and running before we begin rounding up new players....
Just a thought.

Have we discussed the idea of a "mentoring" program for new new players?

Good point.

And Kaine, that was discussed way back when the GRPC was first formed, but unless I am mistaken, I don't remember it being discussed since then.

The program never really took off, even now we have a new player's planet for mentoring but it hasn't been used by a lot of new people.

I never noticed it, and im not completely new to the site, but after being gone for close to between 6 months to a year, I wasn't completely refreshed of where everything was.

If it isn't obvious it's there (I like a giant neon sign saying "NEWBIES HERE!!!!"), then it's gonna go unnoticed to new people.

Re: New Players Guide to the JvS Universe

I posted this for a new player not too long ago, I think it'd probably be a good thing to be put into the guide...or something similar.

[url=http://www.jedivsith.com/viewtopic.php?p=1761609#p1761609:tpxm2ymz]Subject: Requests[/url:tpxm2ymz]

[quote="Adrien Draykon":tpxm2ymz]Friend, first let me welcome you back and apologize that no one was able to help you. If I may, I'd like to give it a shot. Now you want to write posts in different colors, correct? Well it's quite simple, those numbers and letters are what are used as code to accomplish that.

For example.

To write an action sequence you could click on the "Action" tab at the top of the text box. You don't always have to do that if you wish to write differently, I could give you examples of other samples as well if you would like. But for now we'll stick to the basic action code.

[code:tpxm2ymz][Action][/Action] will appear when you do that once that has appeared you can insert your text like so.

[Action]Insert Action here[/Action][/code:tpxm2ymz]

Once you've done that the result will look like this: [action:tpxm2ymz]Insert Action here[/action:tpxm2ymz]

The same is true for the Font color, Narration, Comlink, and Force_Speak tabs and these will look like:

[narration:tpxm2ymz]Narration[/narration:tpxm2ymz]
[comlink:tpxm2ymz]Comlink[/comlink:tpxm2ymz]
[force_speak:tpxm2ymz]Force Speak[/force_speak:tpxm2ymz]

The code for the font color will vary but all you need to do is click on the Font color tab and the color table will be displayed and you can choose your color from there.

In addition you can use the OOC tab, however this is frowned upon in many cases when you use it in the RP boards, but that looks like [ooc:tpxm2ymz]OOC Chatter[/ooc:tpxm2ymz].

Now the NPC and URL tabs works a little differently

[code:tpxm2ymz]The NPC tab will produce this code [NPC][/NPC], however for it to work properly you will need to change this code slightly making it look like this [NPC name=Name of NPC]Insert text, actions, narrations and so on here[/NPC][/code:tpxm2ymz]

And that will look like this

[npc name=Name of NPC:tpxm2ymz]Insert text, actions, narrations and so on here[/npc:tpxm2ymz]

[code:tpxm2ymz]The URL tab will produce this code [url][/url], you will also have to change this one for it to work properly, making it look like this [url=Insert Link Here]Text describing Link[/url][/code:tpxm2ymz]

And that will look like this

[url=http://jedivsith.com/faq.php?mode=bbcode:tpxm2ymz]Click here[/url:tpxm2ymz] and it will further explain any questions you might have. I hope that was helpful, if you have any more questions please to hesitate to ask.[/quote:tpxm2ymz]

Re: New Players Guide to the JvS Universe

Hey, didn't really know if you could use this. I was writing this up for my dueling academy before it died. Maybe it can find a use in your guide. It's not much, but if the content's acceptable, I can start back to writing on it some more.

[quote:3g1mcb9m][b:3g1mcb9m][i:3g1mcb9m][u:3g1mcb9m]Dante's beginners guide to fighting: Do's and Don'ts.[/u:3g1mcb9m][/i:3g1mcb9m][/b:3g1mcb9m]

Welcome to my personal beginners guide to the do's and don'ts of fighting. First off, let me begin by saying that fighting in a text based reality takes practice practice PRACTICE. Iniquitous, Lapay no Ryu, Dunta Coral, Vale, and many others are names you'll here as among the best on the site. All of them though, did NOT become champions of the arena overnight, and all took considerable time to practice, toy with different weapons, styles, and perspectives to find their own personal niche. So, if all of this seems hard; it is. But, with a little perseverance, some practice, and a little ingenuity, you too can become an accomplished duelist.

First of all, let's state your goal. Your goal is to NOT get your weapon to hit your opponent, like this:
[quote:3g1mcb9m][action:3g1mcb9m]Darth awesomeness swings his lightsaber, and decapitates his opponent.[/action:3g1mcb9m][/quote:3g1mcb9m]
This is called "Calling a hit", and is a MAJOR no no both In universe, as well as in the Galactic Battle Arena. You see, this isn't Call of duty - the people your fighting aren't NPC's, they have the ability to dodge, parry, and evade your attack in all kinds of ways. And, as a duelist, its part of dueling etiquette to grant him that chance. Now, you may be asking exactly how your supposed to do damage to your opponent then. And heres the answer:
[quote:3g1mcb9m][action:3g1mcb9m]Darth Awesomeness swings his saber, [u:3g1mcb9m]trying[/u:3g1mcb9m] to decapitate his opponent.[/action:3g1mcb9m][/quote:3g1mcb9m]
See that key word? trying? This implies that there's a chance of failure - thus giving your opponent the opportunity to parry or defend. A good rule to write by, is to never deal in absolutes (no pun intended), for example, try to use words like "Aiming for", "trying", "Attempting", "Striving", "hopefully" and a whole myriad of other words to describe your attacks. Now, when you DO attack, by all means be descriptive, just always use that non-absolute word, for example;
[quote:3g1mcb9m][action:3g1mcb9m]Darth awesomeness quickly swung his lightsaber in a two handed grip, from left to right, to hopefully impact his opponents neck.[/action:3g1mcb9m][/quote:3g1mcb9m]
This, while perhaps a sloppy attack, is acceptable. Your not only giving your opponent a chance to defend, but also defining WHERE exactly your attack is aimed at. Remember, always try to be as descriptive as possible. Now, that doesn't necessarily mean write huge paragraphs (though it helps), but simply give your opponent all the info he needs to know for him to respond to you. A good set of descriptions I personally always give, is the stance of my feet, how my weight is shifted, how im holding my arms, where I'm TRYING to strike, and how I executed the strike. This gives plenty of information for the both of you to work with. Now, as for actually causing damage, perhaps your opponent might respond like this;
[quote:3g1mcb9m][action:3g1mcb9m]Jedi super sage of monkness hadn't been expecting the attack so soon, but calmlly jerked backwards as the saber arced in. Never the less, the saber burnt him slightly on the neck.[/action:3g1mcb9m][/quote:3g1mcb9m]
While admittedly a very basic example, it gets the point across; your job as a duelist, is to write your opponent into a situation where he or she cannot adequately defend against an attack, whether thats through the environment, swordplay, or any other means; however, the same goes for you. You have to know also, on when your character has reached his limits, and it's not feasible for you to try and block or parry an attack. Knowing this, many times, is the mark of a great writer.[/quote:3g1mcb9m]

Re: New Players Guide to the JvS Universe

If anyone is interested, I could help structure a "Nexus' Guide to Fleet RPing" or a collaborative work with several Rpers who do fleets. Thoughts? I don't want to make one if no one is interested; but think of the newbies that would now have something to refer to?

Also, if someone could keep an archive of all the plans that are going on thus far, I think that would be a good idea. Just in case the server happens to start sneezing again and we happen to lose the thread. We don't want to make a ton of progress like last time and have it all gobbled up. lulz
