Re: Dustin's How to RP like you got Game!

This post covers some issues regarding Gravity Wells; I hope you find it informative.
Link.[/url:2mw2b58i]
Gravity generators could be used to create an artificial interdiction field which stopped hyperspace travel in a particular area by mimicking the outer fringes of a celestial body's gravity, useful for both pulling ships out of hyperspace en route and preventing enemies from escaping to lightspeed during engagement. Less affluent groups, such as pirates dragged large asteroids (or planetoids) into trade routes in lieu of the generator or starship method, providing them with both a means to stop shipping and a temporary base or shield against hostile fire.[/quote:2mw2b58i]
Link.[/url:2mw2b58i]
Because of the danger of mass shadows (not to mention interdicting pirates), hyperspace courses had to be plotted with great caution. Very few beings other than powerful Jedi could react while traveling at many times the speed of light, and in any case conventional sensors and communicators could not receive information faster than lightspeed. Even subspace sensors, which operated along an alternate dimension and propogate faster than light, could not keep up with the vast speeds of hyperspace travel. Thus, precise advance knowledge of the celestial bodies along the way was necessary in the form of navigational computers. These devices, also known as nav comps or navicomputers by spacers, contained detailed star charts and the ability to make astronavigational calculations quickly from one point to another before a jump was taken.[/quote:2mw2b58i]
Link.[/url:2mw2b58i]
The gravity wells mimicked a large mass in space and thus restricted hyperspace travel. Nearby vessels were automatically prevented from engaging their hyperdrive, and any ship passing through the area via hyperspace were forced into realspace.[/quote:2mw2b58i]

Re: Dustin's How to RP like you got Game!

I will now be quoting several sections from the Wookie and discussing the topic of CLOAKING TECHNOLOGY(for vessels)... It seems like just about everyone has a cloaking device, but a large majority of people don't seem to be able to RP them properly. I hope this helps you understand the technology better and grants you an insight as to how they should be RPed properly.
Link.[/url:2ekk24sn]
While sensor jammers could leave a starship invisible to sensors, cloaking devices generated cloaking fields that completely absorbed all incoming sensor scans while shielding the host ship's emissions and reflected energy, thus rendering the starship invisible to both sensors and the naked eye. A single cloaking device unit towered over the average Human with a balloon-shaped computer core standing over a series of cloaking field antennas. Below lay the the power cells, which were connected to the cloaking field matrix by a series of wires.[/quote:2ekk24sn]

So, the average cloaking device is larger then a human... How many of you have added them to starfighters that aren't big enough to accommodate them?

Speaking of which: how many of us use StealthX's (and other stealth-equipped craft) without knowing that most cloaking devices works on a "double-blind" system?
Link.[/url:2ekk24sn]
The cloaking device's worse drawback, at least for the hibridium models, was perhaps [b:2ekk24sn][u:2ekk24sn]the "double-blind" nature of the cloaking shield, which also blocked the host ship's scanners and communication systems. Crews and passengers on cloaked ships were unable to peer beyond the cloak's shroud. Since visual navigation was impossible, any other form of navigation could only be exercised by preprogramming astrogation routes. The vessel was thus effectively isolated from the rest of the galaxy.[/u:2ekk24sn][/b:2ekk24sn] Communications, combat operations, and sensor sweeps could only occur when the cloaking field was lowered or disabled. The cloaking device did nothing to impair senses dependent on the Force, however, and trained Force-users could direct even cloaked ships in battle with ease.

The "double-blind" does not appear to apply to personal cloaking devices, or to (at least) the one on GOTO's yacht.[/quote:2ekk24sn]

*****[/color:2ekk24sn]

While I'm on the topic the StealthX's, it seems like a fair few of us (myself included) may have to re-think our usage of them... Unless you can [i:2ekk24sn]somehow[/i:2ekk24sn] pull an entire fighter squadron worth of Force-Sensitive pilots out of thin air...
Link.[/url:2ekk24sn]
The StealthX was described as being smaller than the XJ-series X-wing. It featured equipment that hid the craft both visually and tactically, though position was given away if proton torpedoes were used or if the pilot broadcasted over the comlink. [b:2ekk24sn][u:2ekk24sn]The StealthX was used exclusively by Jedi, as the restrictions on comm usage made it nearly impossible for anyone other than a Jedi to coordinate with other forces.[/u:2ekk24sn][/b:2ekk24sn]

A modification of the already formidable XJ3 X-wing starfighter, the StealthX had a star-flecked body of irregular, matte-black fiberplast that rendered it almost invisible against a background of stars. The third torpedo launcher had been replaced by a gravitic modulator designed to defeat mass-detectors, and its shields had been downgraded to make room for a suite of sensor negators.[/quote:2ekk24sn]
*****[/color:2ekk24sn]

Back to the topic of Cloaking... specifically the DETECTION of cloaked vessels.
Link.[/url:2ekk24sn]
The only sensor capable of sensing a "cloaked" vessel was the expensive and rare Crystal Gravitational Trap, which tracked the gravitational fluctuations created by a large mass in space. Thus, any cloaked vessel was unable to hide from the CGT. However, such cloaking shields also came at a disadvantage to their users because they drained a large amount of energy from the starship's power plant, and (though dependent on the size of the device) a single unit cost millions of credits.[/quote:2ekk24sn]
Link.[/url:2ekk24sn]
A crystal gravfield trap (CGT) was a rare and expensive type of sensor that used a synthetic crystal grid to detect and identify fluctuations in the local gravity field. They could be blocked by the presence of mass, not being able to detect a ship on the far side of a planet due to its mass.

[b:2ekk24sn][u:2ekk24sn]CGTs were the only sensor that could reliably detect a ship with an active cloaking device.[/u:2ekk24sn][/b:2ekk24sn][/quote:2ekk24sn]

This means that you can use other methods (ie well thought out, well written, RP) to detect those sneaky buggers, but for RELIABLE detection, stick to the CGT. If you have to pay that frickin' much for them, you might as well get the full benefits of detecting anyone trying to sneak by your forces.

Also, after extensive research on Wookieepedia, I have found NO evidence of things that can jam a cloaking device. Yes, there are sensor jammers, but not cloak jammers. You can use an EMP; but that only works as it disables all non-shielded systems. (and before you go ahead and shield your ENTIRE fleet, think of how much extra weight that will add and how that will effect things such as maneuvering, available internal space for things like weapons/shields systems, etc.)

This concludes my post on Cloaking Technology, further reading can be found by going to the links below.

Anyone have tips for dueling RP? I am weak in that regard, lol.

The best tip for that is practice, practice, practice. Go try out some challenge duels in the GBA and see how it feels to you. The best way to improve in dueling is to duel more frequently. You'll learn and pick up things as you go along.

Exactly what he said. I find the best advice I can give, is either challenge people who are notoriously good (Pyros, Inky, Kel), and judges of the GBA.

Both will help, if you want, and when I have free time, I can set up a Challenge match between us. And give you pointers via PM and such.

Or I can make a topic in this thread, and teach how to duel there. I will make a format or something, so it doesn't get confusing.
